Black Bear Advisory

20 Feb 2006

From: Donald F. Eslinger, Sheriff of Seminole County

Be Alert … Bears are active in Seminole Neighborhoods!

Although control of wildlife is not a function of the Sheriff’s Office, we have an interest in the well being of the citizens in Seminole County,

And occasionally will alert homeowners of wildlife activity.

There has been ongoing Florida black bear activity in the Sabal Point, Sweetwater Oaks, and Wekiva areas. There are daily sightings being reported, and this black bear activity is being prompted by the presence of food items, primarily in garbage cans.

Activity times for black bears are from sundown to sunrise, however some sightings have occurred during the day light hours as well.

BE AWARE … BE ALERT!

If Confronted by a Florida Black Bear:

  • Remain Standing Upright
  • Avoid Direct Eye Contact
  • Speak in a Calm, Assuring Voice
  • Back Slowly Away
  • Do No Run From the Bear

Please report sightings to S.C.S.O. Communications Center at
407-665-6650. This information will be forwarded to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.
